The LBC discusses Fever Dream by Samanta Schweblin

Hey Book Club Besties,
I can’t believe we are hitting another round of book club but wow! I am so excited to talk about this book! At this point, I’ve read Samanta Schweblin’s Fever Dream at least five times fully. I’ve reread the end more times than I can count and there are still new things that pop up for me. Pair that with having watched the Netflix adaptation of it!!!! WOW - there’s so much to talk about. So TODAY at Noon ET, I’ll be going live on TikTok to talk about it with whoever wants to join.
In case you can’t make that or prefer to engage via my newsletter. I am dropping a few discussion questions below. I can’t wait to hear your thoughts!!!
Book Club Rules
Now I’m usually the type of person that screams “THERE ARE NO RULES IN BOOK CLUB” but I think it’s important to note that I want this space to feel safe for folks to come, ask questions, engage in a difficult discussion, share difficult feelings - without feeling judged. I know that’s a really hard thing to ask for, but I’m going to ask we all try to remain open. I’m not here to teach you about anything you can easily google or try to argue about my own lived experience with you and neither are the folks in the discussion thread.
If you don’t agree with something someone has said - take a quick walk and ask yourself 1) is what I have to add dismissive of that individual in any way? 2) will my comment shut down a valid conversation happening? most importantly 3) what does this add to the general discussion? I’m not telling you don’t comment or don’t engage with each other, I’m only asking we keep it all open, safe and respectful <3
Alright Let’s Get Into It-Discussion Questions
What feelings did you get reading Fever Dream? Were you scared, Anxious, angry, or confused?!!
How did you feel about the little creepy boy David bringing up the worms and asking all these pointed questions? Did you feel like you could trust him or even Amanda, the main character who is dying?
In an interview with the author about the book - she says that because David went through that transmigration and was so close to death [“That is why he is able to help Amanda, because the path she is making toward death is the same path he has made a few years back.”], that’s why he can “help” Amanda. Do you see him as helping Amanda throughout the story?!
The center of the book is very much the original title of the book in Spanish - Rescue Distance and this idea that as parents or mothers we can see danger coming and if we are close enough possibly prevent it. Do you think that’s true? Do you think Amanda could have done anything differently and saved herself and Nina?
What do you think really happened to Amanda and her daughter at the end?!
I picked this novel because honestly, I feel like I owe it to the people of TikTok LOL. I made a video recommending people read it who are “struggling to understand their immigrant mothers” and it’s been the most viral video I’ve made to date.
So I think I owe it to folks to lead a book discussion about it! Plus I really loved this book so much and I think it’s the perfect book to be reading with the holiday season approaching for those that struggle to see and or still have relationships with toxic family members.
